The print at a glance

The whale is the centerpiece, shown in deep navy blue with a pale belly and fine linework along its throat. It rises from a churning sea of white-crested waves, with spray flying off its flanks and a warm glow of reflected light on the water behind it. The sky is split into bands of orange at the top and a dark navy horizon, with stylized cumulus clouds drawn in cream on either side of the whale. Small black seabirds scatter across the orange sky, adding movement to the upper corners. The lettering is set in a bold sans-serif, with GET across the top band and SOON across the lower band in pale blue. Together the flat color blocks and the detailed waves give the design the feel of a woodblock print, bold and graphic. The whole composition balances the heavy text with the energy of the breaching animal.

Who it is for

This card suits a friend, coworker, relative or neighbor who is recovering from illness or a procedure. Anyone who loves the ocean or appreciates a bold, graphic look will notice the whale and the waves first. You can also pick it for someone who responds better to upbeat notes than to sentimental ones. The big lettering reads quickly, so it works for a person who might be tired or groggy when the card arrives. It is also a good match for a relative who enjoys nature imagery and wants a card that feels different from the usual flowers and pastel designs.

Occasions to use it

Send this card when someone is coming home from the hospital, recovering from surgery, or getting over a stubborn cold that has kept them indoors. It also fits a note to a coworker who has been out sick, or a short message slipped into a care package. For a patient who has been stuck in bed for a while, the leaping whale can serve as a little bit of escape. Keep it on a nightstand or desk where the whale can keep them company until they feel better.
